Tips for San Diego Travel during the Holidays
San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to prepare before arriving at the airport if you are traveling during this holiday season. Many parts of the airport's campus are under construction due to the New T1 project. These travel tips are offered by SAN:
Traveling to the airport should be planned ahead of time and arriving early.
Plan to arrive two hours before your plane departs, whether you're flying domestically or internationally.
There will be increased traffic and changes to airport roadways due to construction. The busiest times are from 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
It is typically between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. that checkpoints experience peak screening hours. Up to an hour's wait might be expected.
Remember to allow for additional travel time when returning a car to the Rental Car Center. Rental Car Center and airport terminal shuttle buses operate 24 hours a day.
Ensure you check where the airlines are located(Terminal 1 or Terminal 2)
We strongly recommend making reservations for parking since there is limited space.
This parking lot is permanently closed. Due to this, there is no on-airport parking at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 other than the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet.
At san.org / parking, we strongly recommend you reserve Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet as early as possible.
Both terminals can be reached efficiently by the Terminal Loop Shuttle. We offer curbside pick-up every 10 minutes.
Transit options to the airport are now more diverse than ever.
From Downtown San Diego, take the COASTER to Santa Fe Depot train station or MTS Trolley to Old Town Station.
MTS Route 992 runs every 15 minutes during the week, every 30 minutes during weekends and holidays, and stops at Terminals 1 and 2.
Flyer shuttles connect the Old Town Transit Center and the airport for free, so you can travel from one to the other conveniently.
Driving should be handled by someone else.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other San Diego airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great ways to get to and from SAN. There is a new temporary, street-level crosswalk with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge linking Terminal 1 to the ground transportation island.
Rides can be provided by friends or family.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
Using the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road is a great way to avoid circling the airport and congesting the terminal roads. It is a convenient place for passengers to wait at the Cell Phone Lot, which is free of charge. Following the detour signage will lead you back to Baggage Claim where passengers can pick up their baggage.
Upon arriving at the airport, enjoy shopping, dining, and relaxing!
It is possible to find convenience stores, restaurants, and shops within the terminals that offer travel necessities, meals, snacks, drinks, and more. Availability and operating hours may vary, however. For hours and locations, go to san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.
Before taking off, you can relax at airline lounges or spas. The hours and location of Shop-Dine-Relax can be found at www.san.org.
A variety of eco-friendly and sustainable stores and food options are available at SAN to suit every passenger's needs.
