Travel Tips for San Diego this Holiday Season
Before you arrive at San Diego International Airport (SAN), be prepared if you'll be traveling this holiday season. The airport's campus is under construction due to the New T1 project. These travel tips are offered by SAN:
Arrive at the airport early when traveling.
If you are traveling domestically or internationally, we recommend arriving two hours prior to departure.
Traffic is expected to increase and airport roads will change as a result of construction. There is the greatest congestion between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Typically, the peak screening hours at checkpoints are between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Up to an hour could be spent waiting.
Travel time will be longer if you return the vehicle to the Rental Car Center. There are free shuttle buses running between the rental car facility and the airport terminals 24 hours a day.
Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 is where the airlines are located.
A reservation is strongly recommended due to the limited parking.
There is a permanent closure of the Terminal 1 Parking Lot. Because of this, on-airport parking is limited to Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
For Terminal 2 Parking Plaza and Curbside Valet, it is strongly recommended that you make reservations as far in advance as possible at san.org/parking.
Shuttle service between both terminals is provided efficiently by Terminal Loop Shuttle. We offer curbside pickup every ten minutes.
By using public transit, you can get to the airport more easily than ever before.
The COASTER connects with the Santa Fe Depot train station in Downtown San Diego or the MTS Trolley connects with Old Town Station.
On weekends and holidays, Route 992 operates every 30 minutes on weekends and stops at Terminals 1 and 2.
Connect with the Old Town Transit Center and the airport by using the free San Diego Flyer.
Do not drive yourself. Let someone else do it for you.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other airport-permitted commercial transportation options can be used to reach and leave SAN. A temporary, crosswalk with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge connecting Terminal 1 to the Terminal 1 ground transportation island.
Provide rides with friends or family.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
Using the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road is a great way to avoid circling the airport and congesting the terminal roads. You can wait for arrivals in the Cell Phone Lot for free. Follow the detour signage to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to reach Baggage Claim to pick up passengers.
Upon arriving at the airport, enjoy shopping, dining, and relaxing!
It is possible to find convenience stores, San Diego restaurants, and shops within the terminals that offer travel necessities, meals, snacks, drinks, and more. Availability and operating hours may vary, however. To find out more about the hours and locations of san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax, visit the website.
A day spa or airline lounge is a great place to relax before flying. Information about hours and locations is available at san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.
There are eco-friendly and sustainable food and store options available to suit every passenger.
