Travel Tips for the Holidays in San Diego

San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to be prepared before arriving at the airport this holiday season. As a result of the New T1 project, much of the airport's campus is being constructed. Tips for traveling from SAN are as follows:

The best way to get to the airport is to plan ahead and arrive early.

If you are traveling domestically or internationally, we recommend arriving two hours prior to departure.

Traffic on airport roadways will increase due to construction. Congestion is most common between 4 a.m. and 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

In general, peak screening hours at airport checkpoints occur between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to Transportation Security Administration (TSA). An hour-long wait may be expected.

It may take a little extra time to travel to the Rental Car Center if you are returning a vehicle. There are free shuttle buses running between the rental car facility and the airport terminals 24 hours a day.

The airline terminals are typically Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

There is limited parking, so reservations are highly recommended.

A permanent closure has been put in place for the Terminal 1 Parking Lot. There are only two on-airport parking options: Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Terminal 1 Curbside Valet.

san.org / parking strongly recommends you reserve parking in Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet well in advance.

Between the two terminals, the Terminal Loop Shuttle transports you efficiently. Every ten minutes, curbside pickup is available.

The number of ways to get to the airport via public transit has increased significantly.

Alternatively, take the trolley to Old Town Station or COASTER to Santa Fe Depot.

The Route 992 stops at Terminals 1 and 2 and runs between 5 a.m. and midnight, 15 minutes per hour on weekdays and 30 minutes per hour on weekends and holidays.

Flyer shuttles connect the Old Town Transit Center and the airport for free, so you can travel from one to the other conveniently.

You shouldn't drive yourself.

Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great for getting to and from SAN. Note that a temporary, pedestrian crosswalk with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge that connected Terminal 1 to the ground transportation island.

You can ask friends or family members to provide transportation.

Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.

You can avoid increasing congestion at the terminal by using the Cell Phone Lot at the Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road. In the Cell Phone Lot, passengers can wait for their arrival free of charge. You can get to Baggage Claim via Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, if you follow the signage for the detour.

Upon arrival at the airport, sit back, relax, and enjoy shopping, dining, and entertainment!

Inside the terminals, shops and San Diego restaurants can be found to fill your needs, including travel necessities, meals, snacks, and more. However, availability can vary. Information about hours and locations is available at san.org/Shop-Dine-Relax.

Airline lounges and day spas can help you relax before your flight. Locations and hours are available at san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.

Every passenger has the opportunity to choose eco-friendly, sustainable stores and food at SAN.
