The best San Diego holiday travel tips
San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to arrive at the airport prepared this holiday season. The airport's campus is under construction due to the New T1 project. The following travel tips are provided by SAN:
Prepare for your airport trip by arriving early.
Arrive two hours before flight departures for domestic and international flights.
There may be an increase in traffic and changes to airport roadways as a result of construction. It is most congested from 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
It is usually between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens at the checkpoints at their peak. Up to an hour could be spent waiting.
Make sure you allow extra travel time when returning a vehicle to the Rental Car Center. Rental Car Center and airport terminal shuttle buses operate 24 hours a day.
Ensure you know where the airlines are located—in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
There is limited parking, so reservations are highly recommended.
Parking lot 1 at Terminal 1 has been permanently closed. Therefore, on-airport parking is limited to Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 Curbside Valet parking.
At san.org / parking, we strongly recommend you reserve Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet as early as possible.
In order to get between the two terminals efficiently, the Terminal Loop Shuttle is available. The curbside pick-up service is available every 10 minutes.
With more public transit options available than ever, it is more convenient to get to the airport.
The COASTER connects with the Santa Fe Depot train station in Downtown San Diego or the MTS Trolley connects with Old Town Station.
MTS Route 992 runs every 15 minutes during the week, every 30 minutes during weekends and holidays, and stops at Terminals 1 and 2.
A convenient electric shuttle service linking the airport and Old Town Transit Center is free on the San Diego Flyer.
Don't drive yourself.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great for getting to and from SAN. Note that a temporary, ground-level crosswalk with a traffic light and crossing signal replaces the bridge connecting Terminal 1 to its ground transportation island.
Provide rides through friends or family.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
You can avoid circling the airport by making use of the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road. Located right outside the airport, the Cell Phone Lot is free and a convenient place to wait for passengers to arrive. Follow the detour signage to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to return to Baggage Claim to pick up your passengers.
Sit back and relax at the airport after shopping, dining, and relaxing!
It is possible to find convenience stores, San Diego restaurants, and shops within the terminals that offer travel necessities, meals, snacks, drinks, and more. Availability and operating hours may vary, however. The hours and locations are available at san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.
Airline lounges and day spas offer relaxation before flights. Hours and locations can be found at san.org/Shop-Dine-Relax.
In addition to eco-friendly and sustainable stores and food options, there is something for every passenger at SAN.
