The San Diego Beer Company Celebrates Reclaimed Water!

San Diego Ranks No. 32 in List of World's 100 Best Cities to Live In - LaJolla.com

A toast to reclaimed water beer in San Diego!

Beer made from airport water is not something you see every day at an airport. But today, San Diego International Airport (SAN) and The East Village Brewing Company released beers made with purified condensate collected through the airport's water stewardship program. Pre-Flight Pils is a German-style pilsner with bready and lemon zest flavors. Hoppy Travels IPA is a West Coast IPA with grapefruit and guava flavors. There is currently an East Village Brewing Company beer on tap, and there will soon be a Terminal 2 beer available at San Diego International Airport.

At SAN, the condensate from air conditioning units attached to jet bridges was used in the beers. After reverse osmosis and ozone disinfection, condensate was purified and transported to East Village Brewing Company for use. Brewers can use condensate water as a base for their brews due to its purity and minimal mineral content. Additionally, the water is used to clean equipment and vehicles at SAN, as well as in cooling towers that control the terminal's temperature.

Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, stated that we first partnered with The East Village Brewing Company in 2019 when the brewers at another local brewery used the condensate to create SAN Test Pilot. Since then, we've been interested in doing another collaboration. As a business committed to sustainability, East Village Brewing Company's efforts at the airport align, and we are excited to be able to showcase reclaimed water innovatively with their help. Cheers to another successful collaboration!

In our brewery, we focus on whole ingredients, sustainability, and community, said Aaron Justus, brewer and owner at The East Village Brewing Company. There is a lot to love about this collaboration. We are happy to partner with airport again, a pillar in our community with a lot of passion and fun. A superbly pure brewing water is produced from the condensate. The drought in California has been ongoing for some time, so water reclamation is an effective way to reduce our water footprint.

Sustainability is an important aspect of East Village Brewing Company's operation, brewing practices, and final products. As an example, hops and malt ingredients are sourced from farms certified under Global GAP and Salmon Safe, and the company provides giving their grain to a local farm to feed cows and pigs, and sourcing all raw materials from companies located on the West Coast of the U.S. Furthermore, the heat exchanger uses reclaimed water for cleaning and brewing. Lights lighting is low energy LED and motion-activated, and cleaning products and soaps in the tasting room and bathroom are environmentally friendly. In addition to not using shrink wrap and other single-use plastics, the brewery is paperless.
