The Del Mar Fair: A History

It's been a tradition since the 1880s to have the Del Mar Fair in San Diego! Agricultural festivals are common at county fairs in the United States. Contests like pie baking, fruit and vegetable tasting, and horse races were held in the community. Since 1936, the Del Mar Fairgrounds has been home to the fair. San Diego's County Fair found its permanent home when the 22nd District Agricultural Association purchased 370 acres along the beachfront. There were two-year gaps due to World War II in 1917-18, and another two-year gap in 2020 due to Covid19. In 2021, a smaller version of the festival was held, and in 2022, the full-scale fair returned.

There have been several changes in the fair's name over the years. As of the 1950s, this exposition was called the Southern California Exposition and San Diego County Fair, which later became the Southern California Exposition. It was officially renamed The Del Mar Fair in the 1980s. Del Mar Fair has been called the San Diego County Fair since 2002, but most locals still call it that. The San Diego County Fair is the same thing as the Del Mar Fair, so don't get confused!
